Bits

A bit is a piece of horse tack that is actually used in most disciplines and horse riding activities.  The bit is usually made of a type of metal and is placed in the mouth of the horse to allow the rider communication and control.  The bit should rest comfortably on the bars of the mouth (an area in the mouth where there are no teeth).  It is important to use the right bit and have it sized properly to ensure that you and your horse are both as comfortable as possible and getting the most out of each ride.  Feel free to call us at 1-800-867-8225 if you have any questions at all about bit fitting or finding the right bit for your current needs.

• Does my bit fit?
  The first step to making sure your bit fits correctly is to attach it to a bridle or headstall and then put it on your horse. Make sure that the bridle is adjusted so that the two sides of the bit are hanging evenly and that the sides of the horse’s mouth have 1-3 wrinkles each. Remember the saying “The horse should smile, but shouldn’t die laughing”
  
  The next step is to encourage your horse to open his mouth so you can peek in and make sure that the lowest point of the bit is at least half way up the tongue. The bit might sit a little bit higher, but should never be lower than about halfway. A low hanging bit is going to bump against your horse’s teeth and minimize the effects of the reins by sliding around. It is also more likely that your horse will use his tongue to play with the bit and/or put his tongue over the bit if it is hanging low in his mouth. If the bit is sitting too high will pull on the corners of your horse’s mouth and not allow the rein pressure to release.
  
  The third step is to check if the bit is too big or small for your horse’s mouth. Ideally you will see between ½” and 1” of bit-bar sticking out on either side of the horse’s mouth. If the bit is too small it will pinch the corners of your horse’s mouth, but if it too long it will slide around and potentially sit too low in the mouth.

  WRONG!
  Bits can be backwards, upside down or even twisted. We have seen this time and time again, so if you don't know for sure feel free to ask us.
