In 1970 Timothy Leatherman, a newly graduated mechanical engineer, was travelling and saw the need for a "Boy Scout knife with pliers" to make small repairs when a full tool kit was not available.  In 1983 he partnered with Steve Berliner to form the Leatherman Tool Company.  Today Leatherman produces a variety of quality knives and multi-tools.
